Now that the ashes of the Post-Orientation Party have settled, it is time to reflect on a period where you, the newly minted Hwa Chongians, have experienced different facets of College life. We saw how you battled for the glory of our Faculty and shed blood and tears during war games. We heard you when you cheered your lungs out for your Faculty mates during Campfire. We bore witness to your unfailing dedication to learning the Faculty Dance. And last night, we saw this dedication translated into a tidal wave of red which rocked the Central Plaza. Although we did not clinch the title, it was evident that the spirit of our Faculty and enthusiasm of each and everyone of you present left a deep impression. We sincerely believe that this period of bonding has given you memories to cherish and remember and always remember, once we are united, the Aresian spirit never fails.

In closing, we want to thank the Faculty Committee for having 'indoctrinated' you in the ways of being an Aresian, and especially our suave and groovy Dance ICs Chit and Chong Tee for showing us what dedication and passion to your craft is.

Despite our numerical population disadvantage, we made up for what we lacked in quantity with our undeniably superior quality, eventually finishing just 4 measly points behind the yellow floating heads of Apollo. Dear JC Ones,

The promotional examinations are almost upon us. For some, it will be the first time they will be cramming so many papers in such a short space of time and scrambling to find precious minutes and hours. For others, it marks the culmination of a year's worth of blood, sweat and I bet, many tears. No matter which category you belong to, we would like to wish all of you the very best in the upcoming promotional examinations.

I still remember my promotional examinations in September/October 1990. I had been playing the fool for most of the year and was panicking. I was so hopeless in Economics that I decided to put my teacher out of her misery by volunteering to drop the subject 3 weeks before Promos. Basically, I didn't have much common sense to read Economics, I am still searching for some even today... In the end, I had to hedge everything on two A level subjects just to scrap a pass to get promoted. Back then, my classmates and I had very low expectations. We just want to get promoted. Thankfully, we managed to survive.

If there was one thing I took away from that experience, it is the belief one must have in oneself no matter how desperate the situation looks. Give it your best shot.

So there, grit your teeth, spend your time wisely and show your indomitable spirit.

Certainly, surely, RED is the color of the flame of passion, the heart of love, and the shirt of Ares. And as the school term comes to a close, yet another faculty event draws near - the FESTIVAL OF SPORTS. The sports that will be contested include:

While the competition is at the inter CT level, a SIGNIFICANT number of faculty points are up for grabs if we all take part. The deadline for registration is on MONDAY (8th SEPTEMBER). Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the day (well actually, the night) is almost upon us. Take no prisoners! It's OUR night on the 15th of August this Friday evening, so prepare yourselves for utter carnage at the hands of.... our MCs for the night!

You'll be left in pain from the laughter. Also, look out for acts by The Kinky Dudes and The Meanies - presenting a skit, song and a dance!

Not forgetting our smashing solo performers, entertaining us with everything from songs to... inspirational speeches?

An End to A Chapter of Hwa Chong's History

A most revered institution in Hwa Chong finally made his exit today. Our dear security guard supervisor Uncle Chong bade his farewell to the school he has worked in for the last 8 years. Uncle Chong has indeed been a stalwart in ensuring the security of our College. A few years back, he even gave chase to an intruder who sneaked into College to steal from our students. The pursuit took him out of school and across the overhead bridge. Not bad at all from a 4o plus year old. Uncle Chong has always been accommodating to our requests for opening rooms at the last minute for meetings or study sessions. He has indeed been of great help to our faculty committee and students during dance sessions and Dramafeste rehearsals. Beyond the often fierce and intimidating exterior is an individual who is ever willing to extend a helping hand whenever possible. We are indeed glad to have known him. Here's wishing him all the best in his future endeavours. He will be remembered as a friend of ARES...

Yeah bby, too cool for school. Anyway, here are some other gods of war:

Odin, the chief god in Norse Paganism. Though the roles of gods in Norse mythology are complex, and he isn’t so much the God of War as he is also associated with wisdom, war, battle and death and also magic, poetry, prophecy, victory and the hunt… oh well! Interestingly enough, the horse was closely linked to him as a symbol of his power.

His wife cheated on him though. Wonder why.

Our next God of War is this dude called Murugan. Well, actually, you can call him Senthil, Saravaṇa, Kārttikeya, Arumugam, Shanmukha, Kumāra, Guha, Skanda, Subrahmaṇya, Vēlaṇ or Swaminatha.

He’s a Hindu deity!

What's my point? Uh... Ares is the BEST God of War ever. Yeah. Meanwhile, let me direct you to this game, which, while slightly tedious, is also deceptively addictive. Potential publicity and dance I/Cs are required to come down on 2 days- 1 for an interview and Friday to showcase their art piece/ choreographed dance (refer to details)*.

Interviews and art/ dance showcases will be conducted as a group, according to your classes (I.e. 6 applicants from a particular class will be interviewed together).

Do remember your time slot and come prepared. Should you be unable to make it due to any reason, make a mutual swop with any of the other applicants and inform us of who you are and who you are swopping with at 97365549 at least a day beforehand. Applicants are excused from CCA for the interview. Venues will be posted on the blog once they have been confirmed.

Here’s a heads up on the things we’ll need you guys to do –

To-be Activities ICs• Spend time at places that stimulate your creative juices and think of quirky and fresh ideas for faculty outings!
• Note: If you can come up with ideas for inter-faculty activities that will be a bonus, though please do take the overall feasibility into account!

*To-be Dance ICs• Prepare a choreography (4 sets of 8) for next year’s winning faculty dance :)
• The choice of song is up to you, though catchy songs are preferred. Please try to work in a cheer into the dance!
• Note: Please make the necessary arrangements – we will have a laptop available on that day so you can bring your music file in a thumb drive, CD or just use your handphone.

*To-be Publications ICs• Prepare a design for the Ares board on a minimum and maximum working space of a4 and a3 size respectively. Design should be in portrait format.
• Note: It will be a bonus if you can think of ideas such as attractive, interesting columns that are updateable so as to attract a regular viewer base.

To-be Secretary/Treasurers• Exchange all your cash to 10cent coins to practice your money counting skills!
• Note: You may decide to take a pass on this one

To-be Sports ICs• Undertake a journey of self-discovery

On the whole, we hope you guys understand that like the central problem of economics (scarcity), there are a limited number of people whom we can choose to be in faculty committee. However, we sincerely hope you will respect our decision and continue to support the trail-blazing, simply amazing heart-stopping, jaw-dropping, eyeball-popping, loudest, funkiest and most happening faculty – Ares! no matter what!

Yo Ares! Here's a preview of our fac outing location, with a really nice view of the southernmost tip of Asia (beyond the bridge) You can still come and pay on the day itself if you haven't placed an order for tickets!

Remember, it's 19th April (this Saturday) from 6 to 10pm (evening programme) and at 2.30pm for those taking part in the treasure hunt ((: Dress code's casual, so anything goes!

Bring along your own picnic mat if you have one, or you can use the canvas sheets that we'll be providing. However, canvas sheets are limited, so try to bring your own!

Remember to give your fac hunk and babe nominees a pat on the back for their courage in joining the competition if you see them around in school ;)

Due to demand for Ares Pullovers, we are considering ordering a second batch if we can meet a certain quantity which the suppliers are willing to print for us for a reasonable price.

We will be setting up a booth outside council room on Wednesday (8th April) and Thursday (9th April) from ~2 to 4pm. So do come down to order if you are interested! You need not pay yet, as the order is not confirmed until we reach a target. We will contact you and let you know whether we are ordering it or not. It will cost around $19 - $20. So, ask your friend/seniors/teachers if they want one and place the orders asap! You don't have to be from Ares to own an ARESpullover!

In case you were laughing too hard to hear this morning (and we're sure most of you were), Ares will be offering a profession of friendship service on 14th Feb!

Our booth will be open from 9am to 4pm in the canteen. To engage our mascot's hugging services, just come down to our booth and pass us your message and/or gift and tell us your recipient's name and class (and preferably give us some details on how to find him/her!)

We'll be offering complimentary cards for you to deliver messages to your "not-so-special" friends or even to teachers!

In addition to that, we'll be doing song dedications in the canteen, so do pop us a note on Friendship Day!

Hey Ares! There's going to be a dance practice on TUESDAY (tomorrow)!

It'll be a starting-from-scratch kind of Ares fac dance lesson. SENIORS are also highly encouraged to join in and learn too! YO Ares! Campfire was a BLAST! You guys and gals really blew us away with your support for Ares during Campfire. Congratulations to A13 for bagging the BEST PERFORMANCE of the night, and thank you to A10 for designing what we felt was the TRUE best flag of the night! (Once we get pictures of the showcased items from Zhongwei, we'll make a post dedicated to them!)

Also displayed was the Ares Faculty Dance 2008! And you will all have the chance to perform the dance, as a WHOLE faculty! We are conducting a series of mass dance lessons so you will all master the dance.

Hey Ares!
For you to have a better idea of how the chalet u're gonna stay in looks like, here are a few shots of NSRCC.

It has many facilities including jacuzzis, a gym, a huge swimming pool, basketball courts, street soccer courts, tennis courts, bowlig alley, arcade, pool and billiard rooms, a playground and karaoke rooms just to name a few.

So do register with your CT rep or tell any Fac Comm member if you're coming but haven't told us yet!

For those that are coming, its 2.30pm at the central plaza! Bring your necessary stuff if you're sleeping over!

Yo Ares! Festival of Sports is gonna be the penultimate faculty event; it'll be the LAST faculty-points event for the year, everything hinges upon it!

The immortal fire-breathing stallion is blazing ahead with a TWENTY point advantage over our closest competitor, the championship shield's so close you can almost taste it, and it tastes pretty darn good.

We've come a long way from trailing the other faculties, fighting tooth and nail to our current position (numero uno!) and this is the home stretch, so let's PAINT THE TOWN RED!

Whats new? There is a BOTTLE-OF-MUGGING-SWEETS attached to each of your class benches! This is a welfare initiative brought to you all by the Ares Fac Comm to aid you guys in your mugging! Chew and suck on these sweeets to keep yourselves awake while mugging for the promotionals exams or A'level Prelims!

Also please note, do leave the bottle at your class bench if you want it refilled. We will refill the bottles at the end of each day until we run out of sweets! If the bottle is not found to be on the class bench [string cut off etc] we won't be refilling it!

Come join us on 28th April 2007, a lovely Saturday night for the most happening red event this month! Our very first Ares faculty outing this year will be held at the private Grand Ballroom of Pines Country Club in the heart of Singapore, a 5 minute drive from Orchard Road.

11 Faculty Prince and Princess nominees will compete for the title of ARES Faculty Prince and Princess 2007. Look out for your very own class prince and princess and gossip about who’s hot and who’s not ( just joking, it’s a friendly :] ). So just lend them your support and give them your fullest encouragement on the night itself! The newly crowned prince and princess will walk away with fabulous prizes. In addition, our reigning Faculty Prince and Princess will grace the occasion and crown their successors personally!

You will stand a chance to win mystery prizes and lucky draws on the night itself and there will be a Most Sporting Class Award as well! Here’s another catch, we will be looking for people who dress up the most appropriately/creatively/beautifully/attractively. The 2 lucky Best Dressed guy and girl will be rewarded handsomely. HIGHLY ENTERTAINING AND THRILLING GAMES (be forewarned) will also be played and it will definitely be a night to remember!

Feeling hungry? Be prepared to pamper yourself with succulent Asian and western dishes served by the in-house restaurant. Best of all, it’s buffet styled! Rest assured there will be enough food for everyone. =)

A Pre-Outing Activity just for you: POOL COMPETITION

Sign up for the friendly competition in pairs and challenge your fellow Aresians in the first ever Pool Competition! Show your friends what you’ve got or simply join to gain some experience. It will be held at a classy pool hall at Monstercue, Le Meridien Shopping Centre (Orchard Road) from 1pm – 4pm. The entry fee is only $4/person, of which $2 will be refunded when you turn up. 1. Games are to be played in a fair and sporting manner, as referees have the right to disqualify any team which competes in an unsporting manner.
2. The judges’ decision is final.
3. Any injury to a player during the game such that he/she cannot continue the game will result in a walkover. Pls do take care of yourself when competing in the games, as we do not wish to see anyone getting hurt.
4. All players MUST wear their faculty shirts when competing. All teams are to report at least 5 mins before their fixtures to the Chief Umpire.

On Games Day, ARES will be judged based on the
1. number of painted faces at each competition venue,
2. level of vocal support at each competition venue

Aresians, we do need you to get your faces painted and scream as loudly as you can for your friends who are competing. However, pls do note that there may be a need for you to be asked to shift to another games venue to cheer as we would wish to have the maximum amt of vocal support possible at each venue. After all, we will still be cheering for mighty ARES!!:) Also, pls be reminded that no form of jeering at any point of time is allowed during games day tomorrow.

The respective venues for the games are:
Frisbee – Field
Floorball – Netball court
Badminton and Table tennis – Hall
Volleyball – Volleyball court
Basketball – Basketball court

We strongly encourage all Aresians to get your faces painted on that day. Rest assured, our face design totally rocks!:) Do remember to scream your lungs out for the Aresians competitors too!:D
All supporters with painted faces are to be seen in their fac shirts, so pls wear yr Ares shirts tomorrow. If you have any extra Ares shirts, pls lend them to your friends who do not have it.

Lastly, just remember to have FUN! So while we’re having the time of our lives tmr, do remember the above important points.The games committee looks forward to your great enthusiasm and support tomorrow :D

hey ares!

hah it's my first time blogging here. oops. anyway, i'd like to use this entry to thank ALL YOU ARESIANS OUT THERE for contributing to RED ALERT :D heh if you still don't know what that is, it's the pillars full of red spots that are filled with your messages (: it's been taken down already after nearly 2 whole months of air time. yay! the fac comm would like to say that we're very encouraged and motivated by some of the sweet and uplifting comments! thank you!

secondly, i would like to wish all J1 aresians ALL THE BEST for Games Day! jia you jia you..play and cheer with all your might. put in as much as you can to do ares proud, as well as have good fun. your seniors will be mugging with all their might too!

and lastly, and most importantly, keep a lookout for updates on our UPCOMING FAC OUTING. it'll be in april/may..and it's gonna be really reALLY exciting. we'll make it as good as it can be ;) so keep your spirits high! of course, start thinking about your class princes and princesses. haha..

Dear fellow Aresians,
The Games Day Organizing Committee is looking for innovative and striking designs for the Face Painting competition on Founder's Day! It's completely fine if you aren't gifted with artistic skills, what really counts is your creativity and spirit.

We're looking for original designs that are simple to execute, yet striking to look at. Its base color should be red, and you can complement it by colors such as black, orange or yellow - refrain from too much complexity, though! So if you think you have that winning design in your mind, do not hesistate to draw it out and submit it to your friendly Face-Painting I/C at eschergirl@gmail.com. :D

Hey all JC1 Aresians!

Here are the details for the Founder's Day Sports Competition on 21st March:

badminton - 5 pairs of mixed doubles per team (total = 10 players+4reserves)
table tennis- 5 pairs of mixed doubles per team (total = 10 players+4reserves)
basketball - 1 boys and 1 girls squad from each team (total = 5+5 = 10 players + 10 reserves)
volleyball - 1 boys and 1 girls squad from each team (total = 6+6 = 12 players + 10 reserves)
floorball - 1 mixed squad from each team (total = 7 players + 6 reserves)
ultimate frisbee - 1 mixed squad from each team (total = 5 players + 5 reserves)
